Maryland Mean Wages
According to the most recent statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the mean wage in Maryland is $60,230 or $28.95 per hour. The top-paying jobs include doctors in the healthcare field, financial managers, marketing managers, post-secondary educators, and various types of engineers.
Remote Work Incentives in Maryland
In an effort to support and encourage growth within the private sector, Maryland’s state government has engineered a telework program for up to 15% of eligible employees. The state government has cited improved work-life balance, a reduction in traffic, and decreased carbon emissions as a result of the telework program.
Building upon the example of the state government, Montgomery County has implemented a number of progressive telework and flextime incentives for local companies. Bordering Washington, D.C., Montgomery County is Maryland’s most populous county and has the greatest number of remote workers in the state.
Because of the perks associated with remote work, especially in large urban areas, the county offers a tax credit. The county will pay up to 50% of the equipment purchased for remote workers up to $2,000, provided that the employee works at least 78 days outside the office. In addition, Montgomery County has a telework resources page that allows businesses to assess their needs and decide if virtual employment is a benefit to their operations.
Although not directly associated with remote work, the City of Baltimore offers two housing incentives to attract new residents. Known as the Vacants to Value program, people willing to move into vacant houses in Baltimore will earn up to $10,000 toward closing costs and a down payment. The city also has the Buying Into Baltimore incentive, which gives home-buyers a forgivable five-year fixed-mortgage rate that encourages renovation and investment.
Maryland is also doing its part to attract small-to-medium-sized businesses to the area in various capacities. Depending on the size of the company and how many jobs it generates, the State of Maryland will provide up to $5.5 million in tax credits, as well as up to $500,000 for startups.
